  • How does the aD5 differ from other drum modules?
In terms of the design concept, sound, and performance, there are a number of important differences between the aD5 and other modules. The aD5 is optimized to produce realistic acoustic drum and cymbal sounds, with natural decay. Instead of synthesized sounds or sounds recreated from different elements, the aD5 contains the sounds of carefully selected drums and cymbals, each one a classic instrument recorded in professional studios using the best microphones and preamps. The recorded drum sounds are high-resolution stereo samples; the superior sound quality is audible and every detail of the instrument’s timbre over the dynamic range is authentically reproduced. The dynamic range (between loud and soft) of our instruments is extremely wide, allowing the player a full range of expression—from delicate taps to intense strikes. More instrument sounds can be added to the module. A collection of quality drums and cymbals are available from the ATV Sound Store, with more being added over time. The aD5 was the first drum module to support the use of pads and triggers from the other major manufacturers. The sound you hear captures the authentic sonic character of the original recorded instrument, without any loss of sound quality. To preserve the tonal integrity of the original acoustic instruments, parameters such as pitch and decay cannot be edited. For more information check the aD5 product information page.
  • Are there dedicated pads for the aD5 made by ATV?
Yes, ATV's aDrums artist series drum and cymbal pads are designed to work optimally with the aD5 sound module. aDrums artist pads take full advantage of the aD5's fast, accurate triggering and acoustic drum sound to deliver a natural playing experience with unmatched expression across the full dynamic range. Please check the aDrums product page for more information on aDrums artist Basic, Standard, and Expanded kits. For information on specific aDrums artist pads and cymbals, please check the aDrums single items page.
  • Why are there fewer factory sounds in the aD5 compared with other manufacturers' modules?
ATV’s focus has always been on quality rather than quantity. Every sound should be a usable sound that inspires the player. Pursuing quantity would have inevitably led to diminished instrument sound quality. The aD5 aims to reproduce a natural and realistic experience of acoustic drums and cymbals across their full dynamic range. All aD5 instruments are carefully crafted sounds that take time to produce. Our selection of top-quality instruments and vintage classics are meticulously recorded in the best studios using boutique equipment. Rather than ship the module with a bloated sound set and fewer options for expansion, we created the ATV Sound Store to make it possible to add more sounds to the module after purchase. Please visit the aD5 product page for more information.
  • Can the number of sounds in the aD5 be increased?
Yes, the ATV Sound Store has a growing collection of instruments that can be added to the aD5. The first step is to create an account on the Sound Store and then register the aD5 product ID. After that, the aD5 user can fully access free and paid instruments for download. The Sound Store has a selection of free aD5 instruments available for download. [4] Access the FINE ADJUST page to make further subtle adjustments to the performance response of the selected pad. For more information about trigger setup and settings, please refer to section 9 'Trigger Setup' in the aD5 Reference Guide.
  • When I strike a tom, why do I also hear that a low-volume cymbal sound is triggered?
This unwanted secondary triggering is due to crosstalk between the pads. To eliminate crosstalk, please run the aD5's Crosstalk Cancel Wizard. Press [MENU] > [SYSTEM] tab > [TRIGGER] > [CrossTalk Cancel Wizard]. Please follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process. The following video demonstrates the Crosstalk Cance Wizard: It is advisable to run the Cross Talk Cancel Wizard whenever you change the position of your pads and cymbals, or when you add new pads to the kit.
  • I have to hit the pads quite hard to obtain a reasonable volume. What should I do to increase the sensitivity and volume of the response?
The first step to improve the response would be to re-run the Trigger Setup Wizard, ensuring that you perform the soft and hard dynamics naturally when prompted. To access the Trigger Setup Wizard, follow the steps demonstrated in this video on 'aD5 First Time Setup': After this completing the Trigger Setup Wizard process, access the trigger settings to check the dynamic range of your performance: Press [MENU] > [SYSTEM] tab > [TRIGGER] In the TRIGGER SETUP > ADJUST screen, check that the dynamics meter approaches "ff" when you strike the pad strongly. If the meter does not reach "ff," increase the value of 'Sensitivity' until the meter reaches "ff" when striking strongly, or re-run the trigger setup for each pad. The curve settings can also be adjusted to help you reach higher dynamics with less actual strike force. There should be no need to strike the pads with an excess of power in order to reach higher dynamics. Continue to work on settings adjustments in the module and play within the dynamic range you normally use. If the meter reaches "ff" but the sound's volume is still low, then check the pad volume levels in the PAD LEVEL screen and adjust the master volume level setting of the aD5. For more information and tips, please refer to our blog article on aD5 Trigger Settings.
  • What's the best way to adjust the sensitivity of the pads?
When adjusting the sensitivity of the pads, we advise that you pay attention to the trigger meter shown on the left side of the TRIGGER SETUP > ADJUST screen. From the main menu, select the [SYSTEM] tab Press [TRIGGER] Press [PAGE >] to access the TRIGGER SETUP > ADJUST screen shown below. Make sensitivity adjustments while striking the pad normally. Do not use excessive force or unnatural stroke articulation. Avoid striking close to one of the pad's sensors. Adjust the sensitivity so the trigger meter indicates "ff" when you play a fortissimo (strong) strike. Verify that the trigger meter reaches the "mf" level when you play mezzo-forte (normal strength). You can adjust the sensitivity in the "mf" region by changing the Curve setting. For more tips and information, refer to our blog article on aD5 Trigger Settings.

  • What are ZONE A, B, and C?"
A pad's response is separated by trigger zones. So for example, the head and rim of a drum pad correspond to two trigger zones (A, B). The aD5's drum and cymbal pad trigger inputs can have up to three zones differentiated by your playing technique. The table summarizes the pad inputs and their supported trigger zones. For example, when a snare drum instrument is assigned to the snare drum pad, sounds for the head, open rim shot, and sidestick zones are assigned to zones A, B, and C as follows: Zone A: Head Zone B: Open rim shot Zone C: Sidestick (cross-stick). For ride cymbals, the zone and sound assignments are different. Zone A: Bow Zone B: Edge Zone C: Cup* *The cup or bell sound is generally only used for the ride cymbal and requires two cable connections. Pads connected to AUX1 and AUX 2 support zones A and B.
  • How do I change the snare drum's sidestick (cross stick) to a different sound?
This process is called Tone Assignment. It enables you to change the snare drum's sidestick sound to the sidestick sound of a different snare drum, or any sound such as a woodblock. When you play sidestick on the snare drum pad, the zone C tone will sound. By changing the zone C tone to the desired tone from the selection available, you can change the sidestick sound. Steps to follow: In the main menu, select the [INST] tab, and press [EDIT INST]. And then press [PAGE >]. The INST EDIT / TONE ASSIGN screen appears. For more tips on creating unique aD5 instruments using tones, please refer to our blog article on aD5 Instrument Editing
  • How do I combine tones to create a new instrument?
The process of Tone Assignment enables you to combine different tones (sounds) to make unique instruments. Please refer to our blog article on aD5 Instrument Editing that explains the process of creating new instruments from tones. Steps to follow: In the main menu, select the [INST] tab and then press [MANAGE INST]. You can use the [GROUP] button at the upper right of the screen to change the instrument group. Select the instrument from which you want to start editing, and then select [CLONE] from the sub-menu. Assign a name to the instrument that you want to newly create, and execute the clone operation. Press [EDIT], and then press [PAGE >] to access the INST EDIT / TONE ASSIGN screen. Assign the desired tones to zones A-C. Example: Splash cymbal to zone A, and crash cymbal edge to zone B Select [Level], and adjust the volume of each zone while you strike the pad. This instrument will sound regardless of the pad you strike. Press [OK], and then press [HOME] to return to the home screen. Strike the pad to which you want to assign this instrument. Press [INST] at the left of the home screen, and change the instrument. Press [OK]. The video below shows an example of instrument editing and creation using tone. This example assigns the sound of a splash tone to a crash cymbal's bow (zone A). This instrument design means you can play a crash tone (zone B) and a splash tone (zone A) sounds from a single cymbal pad. * Please note that pads connected to KICK and TOM 1 to 3 can only trigger zone A; they do not support zone B.

  • Why does the aD5 sound different from other drum modules?
The aD5 is a cutting-edge drum sound instrument that delivers a realistic and precisely detailed reproduction of acoustic drums and cymbals. In the past, drum sound modules could be prone to sound degradation and phase changes caused by the editing functions used to disassemble and reassemble the sound. Another factor was sample looping techniques that were used to decrease the size of sound data stored for an instrument. These technical compromises had an impact on the sound quality. With the aD5 - the sound module created for aDrums - we developed technology to capture the true sound of instruments at high resolution with the intention of instantly playing back the huge amounts of data involved. We did not compromise on sound quality, ensuring the crisp attack of a snare, the natural decay of a cymbal or tom, and even the subtleties of the studio ambience, are all reproduced in every detail. For more details, check out the aD5 product page.
  • How many aD5 instrument sounds are there?
The aD5 sound module ships with five bass drums, five snare drums, four tom sets, five hi-hats, five ride cymbals, and thirteen crash cymbals. All these sounds are high-quality sounds that are really usable. In our experience, this collection alone is enough to create a lot of great-sounding kits. In addition, more free instruments can be downloaded from the ATV Sound Store after you create an account and register your aD5's product ID. The sound store also has a great selection of paid instruments - a curated set of 'must-have' classics as well as official drum sounds produced in partnership with the Japanese drum company Canopus. For more details, check out the aD5 product page or visit the ATV Sound Store.

  • Can the xD3 module be used with pads from other manufacturers?
Yes, it is possible, but ATV does not offer support for the xD3 module when used with other manufacturers’ products. The xD3 is designed to be used with EXS series kits pads and is not sold separately. Unlike ATV’s aD5 module, the xD3 does not include trigger settings for pads from other manufacturers. In practice, the xD3 does seem to work well with Roland pads, as this video shows: If you plan to purchase the xD3 module to use with other manufacturers’ pads, then be aware that the level of compatibility may not always result in a satisfactory triggering response. Always ask the dealer for their advice before making the purchase. Please also note that the xD3 module does not include trigger settings for certain aDrums artist pads: aD-K18, aD-S13, aD-T10, aD-T13, aD-C18, aD-C10, aD-CH17, aD-C17FX. If you have questions on this topic, please contact us
  • Can I use the EXS series pads with other manufacturers’ sound modules?
This will depend on the module you intend to use. The aDrums artist cymbals included in the EXS-3, EXS-3CY, and EXS-5 kits, are compatible with modules such as Pearl Mimic Pro, and some modules from Roland and Yamaha - although these companies do not support other manufacturer’s pads. There are also cases where EXS series pads such as the xD-K13, xD-K10, xD-P13M, and xD-P10M are shown to be working with other manufacturer’s modules, particularly the Pearl Mimic Pro and Roland modules: If you are interested in using EXS series pads with another manufacturer’s module, we recommend contacting dealers who sell similar kit packages for advice on a combination that matches your particular requirements.
  • I purchased an xD3 module. Can I upgrade later and buy the EXS pads and rack to make a full kit?
This will depend on the ATV product packages offered by dealers in your region. The xD3 module and EXS series pads such as the xD-P13M and xD-P10M are not sold separately by ATV Corporation. However, some dealers may offer the xD3 module and these EXS series pads as separate items. Please check with ATV dealers in your region to see what options are available.
  • What is the difference between the EXS-5 and EXS-3CY?
The EXS-5 and EXS-3CY both use the xD3 module and include a full set of our cutting-edge artist cymbals used with aDrums. The main differences are the pad and cymbal sizes. EXS-3CY The EXS-5 has larger 13" pads for the kick, snare, and floor tom. The EXS-3CY uses all 10" pads. Also, the EXS-5 has larger cymbals: a 16" ride, 14" crash cymbals, and a 14" hi-hat. In comparison, the EXS-3CY has a 14" ride, 12" crash cymbals, and a 12" hi-hat. Because of the size differences, the two models have slightly different racks and hardware. The EXS-5 has a larger footprint. EXS-5 For more information on the kit specifications visit the EXS Series product page.

  • Why does the EXS series xD3 module sound so good?
ATV drew on its experience with the aD5 to develop the xD3 sound module. The aim was to reproduce the authentic sound of acoustic instruments at high resolution. ATV does not compromise on sound quality, so all EXS kit instruments are designed to have the natural attack and decay of acoustic drums and cymbals across the full dynamic range. To experience the great sound of EXS series kits, please try the Sound Tour application. For more information, check out the EXS series page as well as our videos.
  • Is it possible to upgrade my EXS series kit with some aDrums pads?
Yes, this is possible, but because the EXS series is a different product line, not all xD3 module versions include trigger settings for all aDrums pads. If you are interested in a kit that combines the features of both the EXS series and aDrums, then we recommend the EXS-5SK artist kit. Introducing the EXS-5SK artist The EXS-5, EXS-3CY, EXS-3, EXS-2 Mk2, and EXS-1 Mk2 versions of the xD3 module do not have the following ATV pad model trigger settings available: aD-K18 aD-S13 aD-T10 aD-T13 aD-C18 aD-C10 aD-CH17 aD-C17FX In practice, it is possible to work with the existing pad model trigger settings included in the xD3. Usually, there is no problem dialing in an acceptable response when using any of the ATV’s drum and cymbal pads. If you have questions on this topic, please contact us.
  • Can I play my EXS series kit using brushes or rods?
Playing with brushes or rods is not supported. If you use brushes or rods then the mesh head surface will quickly start to tear. We recommend using sticks with wooden tips that are not chipped or damaged.
  • What kind of kick pedal beater should I use?
ATV recommends that a hard plastic beater is used. If a felt-covered beater is used without a patch on the head, then the contact will cause friction and heat that tears at the mesh head surface. Using a felt beater without a patch will greatly shorten the playing life of a mesh head.
  • How do I play my own songs from the SD card?
The xD3 module supports the playback of user audio files in .wav format. This feature enables players to copy their own song files to the SD card and play them using the xD3's Song features. Supported Audio File Format: File Type: Windows Wave (RIFF) Filename Extension: wav, WAV Sampling Frequency: 48 kHz Bit Depth: 16 bits File Size: Up to 2 GB Copy Audio Files to the SD Card Copy the .wav file(s) to the SD card's root folder, as shown below. Playback Select a .wav file by following the instructions for "Selecting a Song and Playback control" in the EXS Series user manual.
  • Can I import aD5 instruments to the xD3 module?

When these files are downloaded from your ATV sound store account, they are encoded with the registered product ID. The import permission problem can occur because of a mismatch between the module and store registration data, usually because of a mistake made when entering the product ID number or the product name (aD5, EXS-5, EXS-3, EXS-2 Mk2, EXS-1 Mk2).
